Today, as it must have been 155 years ago, the grounds around the Octagon House are gorgeous and the views spectacular. One can only imagine the view from the cupola.
or taking a stroll on the grounds... it is worth a visit for the peace and beauty experienced at this place.
The house is set on a 60 acre plot that is situated along the White Oak River with a great view across the river to the small coastal town of Swansboro.
Originally, there were several out buildings in addition to the main house on the working plantation. The kitchen was a separate building located just north of the existing house.
There was also a dairy barn, a smoke house, a wagon house, stables for the horses, and the privy (outhouse).
In addition to the farm related buildings and tenant houses, there was a school on the grounds.
The family cemetery is located on the grounds near the house.
The grounds provide beautiful vistas for artists and many (myself included) gather there to paint its beautiful landscape.
